You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

" sorry to intrude, My name is Samuel." I say as I reach to shake hands " sorry for the intrusion... " I take a seat and look up at the old woman , I open my journal to record my findings of this small town and explain my journey chronologically " I was born in a small fishing village. My father was a shipwright and taught me his ways. I learned the construction of ships , how to sail , fish ,I learned to brew crisp beer which I am proficient at, and... (Pause)" I dabble in swordsmanship" I say with a slight grin, as I put my journal back in my bag " my youth was peaceful until I turned 19," I pause, readjust my position and with a deep breath I say, "my village was struck with famine after a large storm damaged our ships and our fishing spots had run dry. We belonged to no nation or faction to fulfil our needs and so my father left the village to get help , food, anything to save us. He did not return." I stand up and look down towards the old hag " I left the village at 20 years old in search for my father and a better life, I want to build large ships and sail the realms." I place my hands on my hips and slightly stick my chest out " and maybe ill settle down and open a brewery in my old age" I say with a large grin.

How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: By taking into account the realistic attributes of my characters age, knowledge and physique to create a more accurate representation of what is truly feasible. and avoiding statements rather than attempts Ex:
Samuel Miller fires his bow and pierces the bandit through the heart. a proper rp would be : Samuel Miller fires his bow , aimed for the heart of the bandit.

How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: metagaming creates unrealistic rp, If someone witnesses something far from someone they know and messages them out of game to assist or be prepared it gives them an unrealistic and unfair advantage within the rp. information should all be communicated in game. also knowing things your character has never come across or learned from another disrupts realism.
