Hugo doesn't notice the man at first, captivated by the many vibrant colors of drapery so casually displayed in the ordinary marketplace. He doesn't notice the man or anyone else for that matter, enthralled by the typical aroma of freshly-cut lumbers and dye, until the man taps her on the shoulder. He turns and gives an inquisitive look, and the man responds with an inquisitive look of his own to restate a question Hugo didn't hear. Hugo asks for the man to repeat if he could, and the man obliges.
Hearing the greeting, Hugo beams and says confidently, "I'm here to find buttons!" The man offers a small head tilt and Hugo realizes he needs to elaborate, "I need silver buttons for my tailoring. I went in to my apprenticeship unaware that I had none and he threw me out at the docks onto a ship and told me 'don't you come back here 'til you got some sense and buttons!'" Hugo mimed what was very obviously supposed to be a cranky old man shaking his fists and the well-dressed man nodded understandingly.
