You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”
Erwin stares at the woman suspiciously and takes a second to scan his surroundings and sits on the cushion. Erwin replied to the woman,"I hail from a village which was mainly populated by farmers, lumberjacks, and miners." Erwin would pause for a bit, thinking of what to say next. "My father before me was a huntsman, I would often help him with hunting small game in the nearby woods. Upon adulthood I decided to join the Town Guard. Despite being barely able to read, I was accepted due to my experience hunting. I was assigned to the night watch and would report to the night sergeant. On a typical night shift I would enforce the laws set out by the local lord, ensure that the tavern would close on time, patrol the streets and the outskirts of town for suspicious activity, and check to make sure that buildings are locked. Although serving as a town guardsman was often mundane and boring work I was paid a decent amount of coin for my service in the guard." Before continuing speaking, Erwin hesitates again. His eyes appear to become blank and emotionless. "However it wasn't all just rounding up drunks or catching petty criminals. One night a large group of bandits attacked my village. It initially appeared to be a quiet shift at first, however guardsmen at the west watch tower reported a large group of bandits approaching the village. The guardsmen reported that we were vastly outnumbered. The group of bandits arrived at the village sooner than we anticipated and began pillaging the nearby houses and market stalls. The sergeant in charge of the night watch rallied any remaining guardsmen and we were ordered to evacuate the surviving townspeople and neutralize any attackers. It was clear at this point that the town was lost, although we had better weapons and armor, the bandits had greater numbers. Myself, a few other guardsmen, and several armed townspeople decided to hold off the attackers while the rest of the townspeople escaped. By the time the last of the townsfolk had evacuated, my sergeant gave the order to retreat. At this point the Town Guard had taken heavy casualties. While trying to escape, I was cut off from the main group of survivors so I went my own separate way. I eventually stumbled across an old dirt path which led me to this town."
