Daire Caolan O'Shaugnessy was born to unknown, Elven parents, in The Grand Harvest of the year 257 S.A.. While his exact birthplace is unknown, based on early memories, he could have been born in the vicinity of the Princedom of Caurรณst. It is assumed that he is part Dark Elf, due to his light gray skin and darker hair color. However, as his hair is dark brunette and eyes a deep green, he likely owes part of his heritage to the Wood Elves.
ย
At a very young age, he was found wandering the border of forest and farmland by a human performer named Niamh (NPC). It was unclear whether he was lost, abandoned, or orphaned, as he was too young to articulate what had happened to him or his guardians. Therefore, Niamh began to present him to nearby residents in an attempt to find his family, to no avail. Assuming the worst, Niamh took Daire in, integrating him into her traveling performance group and training him in the only profession she knew how. Due to his lithe build, Daire found ease and natural talent in acrobatics. He began training and eventually performing as an aerial stunt artist. During this time, Daire was surrounded by a group of odd personalities with odd talents that were put to use for more than performance.
As he grew older, Daire began to recognize that theft and crime would take place in the areas his troupe performed in. Despite Niamh's best efforts to shield him, once Daire was old enough to become aware of the troupe's second form of income, he was subsequently pulled into the crimes by the troupe's manipulative and domineering leader, Sullivan Brady (NPC), who would cleverly exploit the troupe's talents for his own personal gain. For a period of a few years, Daire assisted his group in petty theft during performances and, at worst, burglary. It was during this time that Daire formed a romantic relationship with one of his fellow troupe members, Saoirse (NPC), and became best friends with mousy fellow acrobat Walsh (NPC). The trio became inseparable, with Daire and Saoirse doing their best to keep Walsh out of Sullivan's antics due to his timid temperament. This became increasingly difficult to do as Sullivan became bolder and asked more of the group than Daire was willing to risk.ย
ย
Eventually, Daire was driven to express interest in leaving the circus, much to the troupe's dismay. While he was pressured into staying for several more months, Daire finally decided that he wanted to leave. Sullivan asked him to perform one last time with the circus before he did, in which a terrible accident occurred. While Daire, Saoirse and Walsh were rehearsing for the show, an alleged equipment failure caused one of the trapezeโs ropes to snap while Daire and Walsh were still on it. Both plummeted without a safety net. Walsh was killed in the fall, while Daire suffered serious injuries, including a broken back. Saoirse was unharmed, as she had yet to join them in the act.
ย
While it was never confirmed, some members of the circus, including Saoirse, worried that Daire had missed something during his safety inspection, which caused the accident. Despite this, Daire has always sworn he double checked everything, just as he always has.ย In the following months of his recovery, Daire wrestled with both physical ailments, blame and doubt, both self-inflicted and by members of his troupe. This began to lead to a rift in his and Saoirseโs relationship, despite her reluctantly agreeing that he must have been thorough.ย
ย
It wasnโt long after that Saoirse presented the possibility that someone in the troupe may have sabotaged them to prevent Daire from leaving. To get revenge and prevent any further deaths or injuries, Saoirse proposed that she and Daire attempt to expose Sullivan and the circusโs criminal activities. After weeks of trying to convince Daire to do so, he did.ย However, unexpectedly for Daire and Saoirse, the authorities the pair had intended to expose Sullivan to, were bribed with a hefty sum by Sullivan, who then decided to campaign for Daireโs removal from the group due to his betrayal. When it became clear there would be no repercussions, Saoirse flipped on Daire, denying any involvement in the plot and leaving Daire on his own to try to plead his case. Due to his former desire to leave the circus and mentions of his declining mental state following the accident, Daire was cast out from his troupe.
ย
Left to his own devices, Daire packed his few belongings and made for Idunia.ย
The traveller has just arrived in a small town. As they look around, their gaze is met with run down houses and shops. They duck into one of the shacks, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the small room, an old hag raises her head, โWhat brings you to this dingy town?" She begins, then pauses to study their faceโโAh, itโs you. Iโve been expecting you. Sit,โ she gestures at a chair, โWhere do you come from? What do you hope to make of yourself?โ
((How does your character respond? Please ensure your response is at least six sentences long, and uses at least two actions.))
ย
Daire couldn't say for certain what drew him into this particular lackluster hovel, but that had been his reality of late. Letting his steps lead him to the next settlement, the next boarding house, the next stranger without any particular intention behind them. So naturally, an enigmatic crone under candlelight was probably the last thing he would've expected if he truly had expectations. After pausing in the doorway, he ducks slightly to enter the shack, letting his gaze wander before he actually processes her words. Only then does he realize she's awaiting a response, one he's not really in any rush to answer.ย
ย
He points toward himself when she mentions she eerily mentions she's been expecting him. He gives an exaggerated glance over his shoulder to ensure she's not talking to anyone else before cracking an aloof grin. Perhaps a mystic?
ย
"You're wonderin' what bringsย meย here? Mm. T'is and that. I take it you're the welcomin' committee. Seems a drab job fer a refined lady as yourself."ย
ย
Daire does approach the aforementioned chair, but he doesn't follow instruction, instead deciding he's going to prop his arms up onto the back of the chair to lean forward. After stretching his back, he crosses his ankles while shrugging one shoulder lazily. Further leaning into his favorite hobby, sarcasm, he lets out a slow breath as if deeply contemplating her questions. Of course, he isn't really because he finds no interest in telling a nosy old hag the nitty-gritty of his life.ย
ย
"Well, I don't really tie myself down, see. Done a lotta travelin'. Pick a place ya know, I might've been t'ere." It's only after Daire focuses on her second question that his persistent smile gives the faintest sign of faltering. A question he realizes he doesn't like, because he doesn't know the answer himself. Daire decides it's better to dodge it.
ย
"I don't hope ta make anythin' of myself. You try too hard to do that, and people get expectations of ya and that leads to a real mess."ย
ย
A wild grin returns.
ย
"Besides, it's more fun when ya don't know exactly what you're doin', isn't it? That's the best way of experiencin' life."ย
