You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”
Example:
Ellie takes a deep breath whilst she attempts to calm her flood of emotions. She takes a quick glance up at the floating candles in the air before returning her gaze to the elderly woman, steeling her resolve. However, when she does speak, the words come out fast and unfiltered. 'I wish to learn your ways.' She splutters nervously. 'The Arcane Magics. No one in my village has ever learnt them, or even understands why anyone would want to dedicate their lives to them. But I've heard tales of their power, and the good they can do for the peoples of the world.' She takes another deep breath before continuing. 'I've come a long way to find you. Been through a lot. At least give me a shot.' She pauses and takes a deep breath, her mind feeling lighter after finally expelling these thoughts.
The crone stares deeply into her eyes, letting out a gravelly chuckle. 'You've shown bravery by travelling here, young one. But the pursuit of the arcane requires far more than just bravery. It takes commitment. Knowledge. Understanding. I have been learning my entire life and yet, every day, I learn something new. You think you could handle that?'
Ellie pauses as she considers her response. Not wanting to sound too overconfident, she starts. 'I believe I can. The folk from my village are lovely, but they are humble. They are satisfied with living a simple life and cultivating crops, tending to the sheep. Ever since I could remember, I've been hungry for something more. Some way I could contribute to the greater world. I believe the Arcane Magics are the answer.'
