In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Metagaming is taking information that you know out of character to use for in character purposes. An example could be that I know OOCly that "James" is a wraith. My character "Bob" would not know this however, as knowing it would be metagaming since I have yet to learn of this secret.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Powergaming is utilizing unrealistic or even god-like actions during roleplay. Powergaming could also be forcing an emote upon someone else without give them time to react. An example of this could be "John slices off Robert's head with one fell swoop, giving him no time to react."

Born to two Mali’aheral that held little significance in name and history, Emrys' early life was freer than most. Born to parents hailing from the lands of Celia'nor, her parents were merchants, procuring goods when and where they could, While they were not poor by any means, due to the Mali’aheral's beliefs that all of their kind should hold occupations or risk tainting the image of their kind, they were not swimming in abundant riches. They were considered well off, especially in comparison to other creatures that inhabited the world. Due to her parents' occupation, much of Emrys' first few decades were spent traveling. This would become a passion she would carry as she matured, wishing to see and know everything for what it was.

On the first day of Malin's Welcome, Emrys and her family were set to travel west for trade opportunities. It was along these long roads that Emrys would find the fear that would dominate her mind for the next few decades; Spiders. A silly fear, some might say, but for Emrys it was an encounter that traumatized her for the remainder of her years. When asked about what happened, Emrys could recall few details. She remembered passing through ancient forests of ashen colour with her parents and several hired hands meant to "guard" their small caravan. It was only several hours after they had entered the forest, sticking to the crumbling paths, when the monstrosities leaped upon their tiny caravan.  What "guards" they had were swiftly, brutally taken down. Golden eyes opened wide, Emrys watched as the people around her crumpled to the ground. It took her several moments before realizing they were not dead, only paralyzed, incapable of moving. The eight-legged horrors spun their silken webs around the doomed, before dragging them into the ashen forest's embrace. Then, the stinger appeared before her. Light faded, growing hazy and grey as she watched the silken threads cover her, until she too was dragged away. Hours passed, perhaps even days, before Emrys heard voices. At first, she thought she had imagined them. Lunacy and derangement had finally set in, perhaps. When she awoke, she was in the arms of her father, swiftly passing the darkened trees as horrible sounds of scurrying followed them.

Emrys and her family would escape the encounter with these creatures, though not unscathed. The trauma she suffered had bled into her, laying a seed of fear and derangement upon her brow. It took years, nearly a decade, for Emrys to recover from the effects of this encounter. During this time she became reclusive and fearful. Even the smallest spider would cause her to go into a fit of fear, wailing and kicking until it was killed.

Decades passed and Emrys' wounds healed, as do all things mended by time. Though not perfect, her psyche was stable enough to interact with the physical world once more. Adopting the trade of her parents, Emrys would continue traveling with merchants, though she always avoided the jobs involving travel through deeply forested areas. Traveling garnered plenty of opportunities and experiences. She stayed in places such as Elysium, Oren, and even traveling through the lands of Norland for some time. Each place she visited, she stayed for several years, learning about the peoples and cultures she encountered. It was during these times she would begin practicing with some martial skills and her speech craft, becoming known for her manipulation more so than her sword.

Roleplay Scenario:

Not a moment after Emrys had just stepped foot off of the ship that carried her to this foreign city, did a local approach her with wide-eyed smile. She listened to the man speak, his high pitched tone full of enthusiasm. The man had finished speaking and she held her breathe a moment before responding, "Adventure, I suppose. May I ask your reason for inquiring?"

The man put his hand to his chin, stroking the small tuft of hair that stretched from his skin. "I make it a point to greet all of the new faces that enter this city." He smiled as he spoke, his eccentric voice growing more ridiculous by the moment.

Emrys listened and then promptly spoke, with little hesitation. "You stated that you greet all new faces, yet mine was the only new face you greeted so cheerfully." Though she wore a smile, her mind was full of suspicion.

"Ah, caught in a lie I have been! It would seem my tongue is not as silver as they say!" The man's voice grew to just below a shout, making somewhat of a scene. The random locals scattered to-and-fro, away from the man as he spoke. "You seem to be the knowledgeable sort.." He paused momentarily, eyeing the blade at Emrys' hip. "And quite adept at using that. I am looking for freelance workers, to hire for my humble quest!" The man practically sang these words. Emrys thought he was more akin to a jester than an employer. "What say you, traveler?"

Emrys contemplated, she was short on coin and new to this area. Would work land on her lap as easily as it had done now? Or was this an illusion, masking some more sinister motive? If it were a trap, then she might already be ensnared, but if it was honest work then she would lose out. "Very well, take me to the nearest inn and we shall discuss this 'quest' of yours."

He smiled, his grin growing from ear to ear as he bowed and then began to lead the way. Emrys sighed and thought to herself that she always attracted the odd ones. *She followed the man quietly, hoping she hadn't just forfeited her life.*
