How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: In previous roleplays I've participated in I was always taught to never play out another characters response to an emote, any action I take is always an attempt and in most of the previous roleplays was determined by a roll if it will succeed or fail, but even then I would never be the one who determined how the response was played out
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Metagaming to me is blatant cheating if it's used. It's never acceptable under any circumstance as it's a complete break of emersion as a character shouldn't be able to respond to something they have no knowledge about, shouldn't know something complex without having been taught it from another. Overall it diminishes a lot of what I love about roleplay in general and it ruins the experience for everyone involved

You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

Vuln eyed the women cautiously, at a glance she seemed kind but that could easily just be a ploy to lure one close. However he was pleasantly surprised by the candles as they added a good distraction from the scent of the rotted wood and moss he experienced outside, reminded him a little of home. This environment was far from what he was used to, a drastic contrast to the much... cleaner place he'd grown up in, but the pursuit of knowledge was a driving force he couldn't resist, though places like this certainly made him question his choice to leave on this journey when there was still so much he could learn without venturing off to places like this. He took another look at the women and resisted rolling his eyes as he addressed her, instead deciding on a simple nod, "I unfortunately have somewhere else to be, Thank you for the hospitality" he said hastily before backing out of the tent. He'd pull out his map to analyze his route, hoping he'd be able to find somewhere to rest that wasn't here and that was at least cleaned every now again.
