In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: i've roleplayed a lot in the past, and in my younger days i admit i was a power player sometimes. wanting the best outcome for your character -- a character you've probably, even accidentally, bonded to -- is common, but you have to remember that they aren't an all-powerful being [unless they are, i guess]. they're a person with faults, likes, dislikes, and they aren't gonna get along with everyone they meet, or be perfect with every weapon or ability they get their hands on. they're mortal, faulty beings, much like yourself, and yes roleplay is very commonly an escape for some people -- to achieve what they themselves may never have -- but you have to remember what the character you're embodying is capable of.

i'll admit by example, my sona is a very overpowered character who can do quite literally whatever he wants due to unlimited magical potential, but even then, they have faults, weaknesses. they're susceptible to magic-erasing artifacts if they don't know they're coming [and they are already not very observant], their own magic can easily backfire on them and cause unwanted destruction [a fact caused both by her magic being activated by her thoughts, of which she barely has any control over due to having -- like me -- adhd. her thoughts go places, and sometimes her magic responds to them when she doesn't want them to.]

is this making any sense? i may be rambling. in any case, i avoid powerplaying by remembering what my characters are capable of, what their faults could be, how they would realistically react in times of stress, and stuff like that.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: metagaming can easily ruin the ''immersion'' or fun for everyone involved in the roleplay. it's never fun when you're trying to have a casual roleplay, and then someone comes along knowing everything that's happened or will happen in the world, or secret details about you or others' characters that aren't freely known. characters are meant to stay within their world -- they aren't meant to know what goes on outside of it [the 'meta']. it's like if some random person walks up to you in real life and starts listing every personal fact about you, and you've never met this person ever in your life, so it just. doesn't make sense for them to know that information.

it sucks for everyone except the metagamer, i suppose, if ruining everyone else's experience is how they spend a friday night or something.

i hope this was worded alright -- i'm not the best at explaining things ^^'

Character Name: Arbor Starborough
Character Race: Halfling
Character Gender: Prefer not to say.
Character Age: 29
Physical Description: approximately 2'8, 48lbs. white hair, bright magenta eyes. wears brown overalls over a yellow shirt and green, round glasses.
Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town?" She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

Arbor smiles through a furrowed brow. "Have we met?" she asks, taking the offered seat, "I'm sorry, I'm no good with names. Even less, faces." They chuckle, settling in and crossing their legs in their seat.

"My story? So, how I got here?" Arbor clarifies, "It's not a dramatic or heroic story you're asking for."

He begins, fanning his face, "Well, for starters, I'm not from these southern lands. Been born up near Norland, where it's nice and cold. Used to snow, not hot, wet swamps." He chuckles again, "Lots of sun where I was born, glittered nicely against all that snow. I didn't live in a big city, of course, so I got to see all those lovely sights. My parents were farmers," Arbor gestures with a hand, "Old folk -- didn't want for much more than a good harvest. Nice enough folk, raised me well.

"Of course, since we lived out in the country, we didn't get much of a newspaper -- nothing about current events or the like. So, we got blindsided when a war crashed down on our little farm. I don't know if that war had any official name or nothing, like I said: out in the countryside, not much news got to us. But that war was fierce, I'll tell you that."

Her smile grew bittersweet as she continued, "Well, my parents didn't want anything to happen to themselves or me, so we packed up what we could and headed south to start anew -- hopefully without a war on our doorstep. Travelling like that, it's how I spent most of my life." Arbor pauses for a moment, staring down at the cushion, before continuing again, "My parents were old folk, though. All that travelling was hard on them, not mentioning the stress of having to move in the first place. Woke up one day and they were, well... you get the idea.

"Since then, I've been keeping up the travelling, trying to find a nice enough place to build up the old farm again. No luck so far," he jokes, though it would land flat. "Don't know why I'm in a swamp instead of something with more solid ground, but," he shrugs, "guess I was curious."
