In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Since I know next to nothing about how to actually defend myself, I play my characters that way to avoid stepping into a territory I am not familiar with, so I tend to go into situations where power-gaming could occur already playing as though my character is at a disadvantage. Though I try to avoid situations like that entirely.

A way I'd say is good to avoid powergaming if I'm putting myself at risk of accidentally doing so would be to simply keep a clean log of what my character is actually capable of, and using reasoning to figure out if my character is capable of overcoming what she is facing, and how difficult it'd be. Another important factor is communication. There is a system on another server I frequent called P2L "Play to lose". The point of this system is that both parties play through a scene, usually combat, as though they are both going to lose. It requires a decent bit of out-of-character communication to decide who the victor will actually be, but it leads to a more enjoyable experience overall as both players get the opportunity to have their moment in the scene. Of course; that isn't always an option, but communicating is good regardless.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Metagaming is disruptive for countless reasons, though I will put emphasis on only a few.
The first reason is that it can at times completely ruin a scene. Say you and another are putting your characters through a long arc about a mystery, for the example, we will say a daughter reuniting with her father. Let's say you get right to the climax of that arc, where the RP is the most fun and the drama is most memorable, then somebody comes along, reads your nametag and calls it out like it's nothing. It completely kills both the immersion and the moment! And can make the original couple of players really not enjoy their character anymore.

Another way it is disruptive is that it causes complete confusion. Using the first example; if you don't recognise the person calling out names they shouldn't, it's going to take a moment to figure out if they actually should know that information or if it is metagaming. This would then swiftly lead back into the first point, making every negative from that even worse.

Character Name: Alice Natt'hil
Character Race: High Elf
Character Gender: Female
Character Age: 19
Physical Description: A Mali woman with blonde hair and blue eyes, standing at 5'4 with a fair build. She wears black clothing with a small brown cloak and leather boots.
Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

Alice glanced at the hag, watching her gesture. She promptly followed the order, taking a seat where she was commanded to do so before speaking up with a confused tone.

"E-Expecting me? How so? I don't recall organising a meeting with anyone upon my arriv-" She would promptly be cut off by the hag's second request; that being to tell a story.

Alice brushed off her own query, taking but a moment to move on. She hummed for a moment, thinking of where to start, before finally speaking up again, now calmer.
"Well, I'm not here for anything particularly special, I was simply exploring and saw the dim glow of the town's lights, it was cold and dark so I-" Cut off again. This time Alice flared up with irritation. "Would you stop speaking over me? What is the point of asking a question if you will not let me answer! My past? I.." Alice huffed, then spoke. "I was getting to that, Be patient."

Alice took a deep breath to calm herself, before continuing.

"Anyway... I saw the light of the town and I was in need of a place of shelter. I stopped by in hopes there would be a tavern. See, listening isn't so hard, is it? Now, why I needed shelter to begin with? If you could not tell by my appearance, I am Mali. Hence, both my parents are Mali too. Despite that, the village I was raised in is majority human. Our village has a rule on a system called 'callings'. This is a decision made for us as children that depicts how we will give back to the village for raising us when we come of age. Due to the village being majority human; my own coming of age was, how do I say this..? Not accounted for. I had to start at the same time as everybody else. Worse than that, I was unfortunate with the calling I was given."

Her voice lifted with enthusiasm.

"Whilst all of my friends got interesting jobs such as cooking, 'guarding', or politics, I was-", Her voice calmed down yet again. "I was burdened with the fate of farming. You see, my dream is to run a blacksmithing store. I have yet to put any effort into the craft, but I am adamant about spending most of my working life in the forge. Because of that, I could never truly care for the crops I was forced to grow; with no passion behind my work, my harvest was always flawed. Thus, I was disallowed from working there, then promptly kicked out of home. With nowhere to go and not a mina to my name, I left the village."

A small smile dawned her face as she glanced away from the hag.

"That is all I have to share. Now pray tell; do you happen to have any minae spare..? It's awfully cold and I did only come here in search of shelter after all.”
