How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: To avoid power gaming I need to take a step back and ensure that what I'm doing is fair not forcing my adversary to do any action and that my actions are realistic.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: It gives the player an unfair advantage over their opponent giving them powers or info that they canonically didn't know.

You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

I was born a bastard in a poor household. My father abended us shortly after my birth.

I slowly exhale as a singular tear drop falls from my eye. As my memories from when I was a mere child begin to arise. My mother grew ill only a few months after I was born and being unable to do anything my mother spent the last of her days trying to feed me. I watched her slowly wither away. And I sat there slowly fading away as if fate destined me to meet the same end as her. But whether out of pity or a greater destiny they spared me. A band of human bandits found me most likely hours before my life force completely petered out. They gave me my last name. They took me in and they put me to work as soon as I was of age. Unfortunately I was born with a weak body unable to even hold a sword and a shield at the same time. Deemed as a useless asset I was about to be killed by the bandits until after mugging of a mage they brought back a load of scrolls containing sorcery. As the bandits were illiterate they couldn't understand the magic and neither could I until they pulled out the final scroll a scroll containing dark magic. Studying this singular dark magic scroll for the entirety of my formative I learned that if I was not strong enough that I must rely on those who are. I learned the dark art of necromancy and by the age of 18 I had mastered the art of Maledictions, Corpse crafting, and spreading pestilence. After mastering these elements I killed the chief of our bandit tribe. Now I roam the land with him bearing my sword. I journey throughout these lands seeking more power and knowledge.

Now Old Hag do you have anything that I could want or do you want to join my other servant I say with a twisted smile appearing on my malunited face. The tear finally rolls fully off my face and hits the ground and disappear alongside of all the memories that cause it.
