In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Powergaming can be avoided by viewing the situation from both sides, not seeing your character as unkillable, nor unharmable and playing fights fairly. Not only does this prevent powergaming, it makes things more fun too. Weighing out the harm of blows helps you to keep battles/fights realistic, such as not using your left arm if it is slashed by a blade, only controlling your own character's responses and discussing your actions in an out of character channel if you find yourself confused.

An example of powergame would be.

CHARACTER A: They would bring their sword down upon their foe, [CHARACTER B] slashing them in the right arm with their broadblade, causing a deep gash.
CHARACTER B: Dodged [CHARACTER A]'s attack, bringing their dagger and dealing a fatal blow to their chest, [CHARACTER A] would die from this immediately.

In this instance, Character B is controlling how their action would affect Character A, which is powergaming and unfair in P2L [play to lose] scenarios within combat.
To make this fair, Character B would have to roleplay the pain from their wound, and find a way to counteract Character A in a way that only describes how their character would respond, not mentioning the impact on Character A's health.

CHARACTER A: They would bring their sword down upon their foe, [CHARACTER B] slashing them in the right arm with their broadblade, causing a deep gash.
CHARACTER B: Was wounded by [CHARACTER A]'s slash, stumbling back, through the mud he almost slipped, though regained his composure. His right arm wounded, he moved his dagger to his left hand and charged at [CHARACTER A], digging his blade deep into his rib.

In this example, Character B is no longer explaining the results of his attack FOR Character A, making the battle more fair.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Metagaming is described as unfairly using OOC [out of character] information to use to your advantage during situations, in most roleplay scenarios this is usually associated with people using nametags or modded maps [such as xaeros' mini map] to determine where enemy characters are and avoid them. Though this can also be through different means, if you are to learn about someone's character information through say a Biography, you shouldn't be able to automatically use this information from the POV of your character, as realistically you cannot access hundreds of biographies of all the other people in your world. You can only use information OBTAINED by your character ICLY [in character] to be used to determine things about them, such as if you heard someone nearby ICLY was heading to the bridge at noon, you'd be able to use that information ICLY, but if it was stated in an OOC channel, you do not have permission to take this information ICLY, as it would be metagame.

Character Name: Rainer Locke
Character Race: Human
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 24
Physical Description: A human male with ghostly pale skin, a morose expression and sunken blue eyes. He was small and bony, hardly 5'3 and 110lbs. blond hair, peasant.
Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

Locke sat down in front of the woman, walking towards her with a small basket of fruit, he sighed finally able to relax. "I have been foraging, for fruit... You see, I've always wished of having a thriving farm, in a small estate with family, though with little knowledge of my roots after an accident with bandits stealing from me in a distant forage... I do not recall." He shifts slightly. "From a human settlement, definitely; though I only recall my time in the woods, bargaining with caravaners to get by with what I could." His eyes drifted to the ceiling, watering a little from the dampness and scent of moss, which perturbed his senses to the point of nearly sneezing. "Ah.. my apologies, the pollen this time of season, truly abhorrent.." He then continued. "I suppose you could call me a peasant, then. Truly I have naught to my name, though I suppose my heart is bigger than that, which makes me just as human as anyone else." He smiled. He tucked back his blond hair, curled over his face and frizzy from the recent humidity. "But I am hopeful for my future, maybe I will no longer wander and find a place to live, perhaps with a family... a chosen family, and provide for them, as I have not been educated enough to be smart; nor strong enough to fight." He sighed. "It is a shame, I feel so weak and powerless in this world."
