How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: The best way to avoid powergaming is to get an understanding of your own character's abilities, strengths and weaknesses, and limits. People who powergame regularly make their character embark on actions that no real person would be capable of doing. I typically avoid powergaming by limiting my characters, understanding their advantages, and what they're not good at. I also try to be respectful of other people I am engaging in roleplay with because powergaming is all about being unfair.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Metagaming disrupts fair roleplay because it involves an individual failing to roleplay. Acting on the information your character does not know is not respecting any scenario in roleplay.

You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

"You've been expecting me?" He'd ask her. His curious eyes were set upon the elderly woman. He looked outside the tent for a moment before looking back at her. He'd the begin telling her his story... "I was born to two Waldenian parents in a small village. We were ruled over by a lord loyal to the Kingdom of Aaun. My father was a miller who would take up his spear in defense of our lands if ever called upon. As an adolescent I trained under my father and took up his trade. I maintained our mill until I decided to go out on my own. I became an adventurer when I was twenty." He paused for a moment before adding on, "I am twenty one now." He then continued on, "I have seen much the average commoner isn't able to see. I've seen great churches - Canonist ones to be exact. Large war parties, and small ones too. Grand cities and ships. I intend on seeing much more.." He ended his story there, allowing the old crone to speak..
