I was born to an elf and hobbit in the woods. Their people both frowned upon this, so I was kept secret until recent times. From a young age, I was a climber. I would easily scale trees and high walls too high for my friends to follow. I guess peeking my head out of the treetops towards the sky made me feel free. When I was old enough to understand the ways of the world, I realized the situation my parents were in for having me, for being in love. Neither race wanted us (me) mixed with them. My parents struggled to find enough food to feed three mouths, so I took to hunting. I got pretty good with a bow and a dagger. Eventually, I discovered a talent in thievery. Because of my small stature and light feet, I was able to slip in and out of places no one else could. I never took much. Only a loaf or two of bread, maybe a few coins if I was lucky. I never got caught until an elf boy slightly older than me discovered my small acts of thievery. Since then, he’s kept an eye on me, never straying too far. He rarely speaks about himself, or his background. Not that I cared. My main concern was my family. One day, I was feeling cocky enough to sneak into a high elf’s home. I took more than usual, knowing I could provide for my family for weeks with the jewels I found. The high elf noticed, tracked down my family, and killed them. Since my parents did such a great job keeping me hidden, I was overlooked. But I will never forget coming home and seeing the two people I love the most puddled in their own blood, separated. That incident is the reason I don’t steal. Not even on cold nights when hunger threatened to be the end of me. I ran away from the woods. I don’t know where the house is, so I can’t ever go back, even if I wanted to. I ended up in Rivendell, where I decided to try to make a living. I changed my name to what it is now and tried to become a maid. To my dismay, the elf-boy followed me from my home. He got me enlisted in a small band of warriors alongside him. And that is where I am today, exploring the forest around me with the elf-boy close behind in my free time.
I gave him a smile. “Haven’t decided, yet. Maybe a little of everything.”
I continued past him. I watched everything, taking it all in but not really focusing on anything in particular. I was here for a reason. And I would not go home empty handed. I eyed the costly apparel of those around me, tempted for a moment but mentally scolding myself. The oath I had made to never take selfishly chimed in my head like steel swords clanging on metal shields. So I kept going, my task forever present in my thoughts.
