Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”
My name is Elara, daughter of the High Elven noble house of Velmorae, known for our deep connection to the ancient magics of the stars. My people, once proud and mighty, now find themselves scattered across the realms, their lands long lost to the encroaching shadows of time. My house was known for its devotion to balance and the pursuit of knowledge, and for centuries we served as guardians of sacred relics—artefacts capable of altering the very fabric of magic itself.
But like many stories of old, mine begins with a fall from grace. Years ago, a betrayal shattered the harmony of my house. I was just a child when my father, the head of the Velmorae family, was consumed by ambition. His pursuit of an ancient relic, an artifact of forbidden power, led to the destruction of our home and the ruin of everything I once knew. With my father’s fall came my exile, stripped of title, lands, and family.
Since that fateful day, I’ve wandered the edges of the world, seeking the wisdom that might one day restore the honor of my house and undo the damage done. The way has not been easy. The world outside the golden spires of our homeland is a cruel and uncaring place.
I’ve spent years searching for the artifact my father sought, for it is said to possess the power to mend what was broken or plunge the world into eternal darkness. My quest has taken me to places both wondrous and horrifying, but always, I feel I am being followed. Sometimes by the whisper of my ancestors, other times by darker forces, ones that hunger for the same power I seek.
And now, it has brought me here, to this stinking, forgotten town, where the air is thick with decay. The swamp reeks of rot, and yet... it feels familiar, as if something ancient and long buried is calling me here.
So, when I heard rumors of an old hag who might hold the keys to secrets buried deep within the swamp, I made my way here—hoping she might offer me a glimpse of the answers I’ve been searching for, or perhaps a warning.
The hag’s eyes meet mine, and in them, I see something… not pity, but recognition. She knows my blood, my name, and my purpose. And in this strange, dim-lit tent, surrounded by the whispers of forgotten magic, I feel both dread and relief. Whatever it is she has to offer, I know that it will shape the rest of my journey.
“I’ve come seeking answers,” I say, lowering myself into the cushion, my gaze never leaving hers. “I seek the relic my father failed to find... and the truth of my house. If you know anything, I am willing to pay the price.”
I can only hope that the cost is not too great.
