You look at the gentleman surprised and you think that he must be a good merchant or a great thief. Most people are not that hospitable just because they are.
"Greetings, good sir," you reply, "I am here alone to tour this beautiful city. I have never had the opportunity (nor the money), which I certainly do not have now," you clarify to avoid problems if the gentleman turns out to be a thief.
