How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: I word my actions as attempts, and try to think about reasons my character would take such actions, and I also try to describe where the motion is in my characters body so a proper counter or reaction can be described without confusion or having to go back to explain what happened.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: It can cause the story to be soured because it wouldn't make sense why say, an elf who lives in the woods, could perfectly navigate through the desert without help, and it can cause people to put their characters into only the good situations, that would be selfish, instead of them making their own decisions.

You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story."

Cassian glances around the tent acknowledging the fragile tarp of a roof, and admiring the floating candles. He takes a seat on a nearby cushion or chair. "Me? Oh I've just left off to explore, finally got away from home." Cassian pauses for a moment then questions with an expression that shows he is excited for the answer. "Wait.. I've been expected? Who told you?"
