Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”
((How do you respond?))
Borin Boulderbelly came from a small clan that lived deep in the mountains. His family his parents and two younger brothers had worked the mines for many years. Borin was close to them all. One day, while they were working underground, the tunnel suddenly collapsed. Borin tried to warn everyone, but the cave-in happened too fast. He managed to crawl out through the rubble, but his family was trapped inside. The memory of that day stayed with him—the dust, the silence, and the pain of losing the people he loved most.
After that, Borin didn’t have a home to go back to. He wandered for days, carrying the weight of his loss. Eventually, he found himself in this swampy town, tired and hoping to find a new place where he could start again.
Borin then moves into the tent, mud still clinging to his boots.
He sits down slowly, looking around the tent before meeting her eyes.
“Name’s Borin Boulderbelly,” I say. “I came here after a cave-in back home. Didn’t have many other places to go.”
He rests his hands on his knees.
“Didn’t expect anyone to be waiting for me. So why were you?”
