Filip was born & raised on the outskirts of a village at the border between Eriador & civilization, but also between Eriador & wilderness. When he was young, his mother died and he had to be raised by his father who was a woodsman and had been very tough on him from the time he was little (making him tough and instilling values in him for life). He grew up mainly in forests with lots of trees, so he learned to survive in the wild (like how to find food) and studied how to defend himself from dangers in the wild (like wolves) using only what was on him.
Filip is not flexible, so he has gotten really strong and has developed great endurance due to having to rely on finding things in the wild in order to survive things that others would not have been able to survive using only what they could find to protect themselves. He is also very good at withstanding the pain of things that he has gone through in his life compared to most others. He has a lot of pride in himself and is very intelligent for a person that has experienced a lot of hardship.
After his father died, Filip left his home and went south through Bree and many other places. He has toughened up and has continued his journey looking for something in Middle-Earth's wilderness to give him a purpose. Filip is usually perceived as being intimidating, but he's actually an extremely reliable guy.
Filip was a huge dude and he blocked all the light from the candle when he bowed his head and stepped inside the door. He looked at the old guy for a while, then he pulled out the chair and sat down — the old chair made a lot of noise when he moved. He said, "From the north" as he rubbed his dirty hands on his pants.
"I lived very close to nature (close enough that I could hear more wild animals than people). I learned how to put up with animals (by using metal weapons and not using metal weapons) when I was a kid..." Filip took a long breath and sat back in the squeaky chair as he was about to ask some question. He took a long time to ask, "What do I do with myself?" and had a little smile when he talked about it. He moved again and looked out the door again, then he said "somewhere, so I won't have to keep proving I'm good at surviving." After thinking, he added, "Until then, I'll keep on movin' and taking any work that comes my way."
