Roselie was born in a small abbey on the outskirts of Redenford to an unmarried mother named Olivie. Her mother died giving birth to her, leaving her with no one but the nuns to look after her. The head nun, Abbess Liselotte, hated Roselie for her shyness as well as the immoral situation of her birth, seeing it as deplorable that the girl would be reticent in matters of the faith. Because of this, the Abbess gave Roselie less food than the others and made her study the holy scrolls extra harder. This resulted in Roselie being even more shy as she was kept away from socializing and conversation. On her 12th birthday, the abbey was sent on a missionary expedition to Norland, and Liselotte forced Roselie to ride side-saddle on a horse with the escorting soldiers instead of joining the other nuns in their carriage to punish her for getting up too slowly during mass. When her horse failed to move from the clogged Norland gate, it was spooked by a screaming passerby and flung Roselie off before it ran away. Roselie landed roughly with a broken elbow and was rushed to a medic. The medic, an elf, told the other nuns that Roselie’s womb was wounded and so she would never have children. Because nuns don’t have children, they didn’t see it as a problem, but Roselie had long wanted to leave the abbey and have children of her own to raise much better than she was raised, so she was devastated. From then on, she began counting the days until she was 18 and able to leave the nuns’ care on her own.
