Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

Edgar takes a deep breath, contemplating his next words. It is imperative that the maiden does not discover his true given purpose, lest she be an agent of the devil below or a heretic of the depraved kingdoms of contraptions.
"I herald from a far land", Edgar proudly declares, grandiose and self-assured to mask his intentions. If he can appear dull and routine, he may escape suspicion.
"The land of my people has been ravaged by war, there is nothing left but death and destruction"
The lady smiles, eyes glazed and knowing of what Edgar will request next.
"Fair maiden, i simply request passage to the kingdoms further past your town, i can offer payment of menial labour and i can help defend your town alongside your valiant knights against any perils against your town"
Satisfied with Edgar's answer, she provides him a detailed guide on where to catch the next boat or cart, if he so chooses, out of her town. He thanks her gracefully, and prepares to leave.
Edgar is deeply relieved that his scheme worked, for if she knew what he had planned and spread the word, the devils agents would be hot on his heels. He was not out of the woods yet, for the hornet's nest may still be poked yet. Though he knows for sure he is one step closer to vanquishing the demons from his world.
His next move is to establish himself a base of operations, to call out to his fellow people across the world. Together, they may take a stance against demonic forces and contraptions that seek to corrupt this world.
Someone must stop this descent into madness and, as his mentor said, a job done well is a job done yourself.
