The regnal banner of the Pharaohate of Mihyaar

    ______________________________________________

    12 YD 1887, SUNAD DUL-QIDA

    YEAR OF THE CAT

The greater senate of the Ramasarish Pharaohate of Mihyaar with the imprimatur of the glorious Pharaoh, Ur-Sahar-Maharaj, after deliberation and qualitative discourse with the Prince’s Small Council in the westward realm of Almaris, hereby dissolves the Chaldees village operative and adjourns any legislative bodies, parties, and administrative entities formed there-under. The Beth es-Sultan has no longer a will of its own. The sentences of the superior courts can no longer be executed. All denizens are dismissed from their post, right, and prerogative to deputise and/or enforce the Sancta Lex Mihyaar (1884). His Supremacy cannot lead any longer.

Successive changes and the exacerbation of the pollutants from the Pool of Waste have, from year to year, reduced the Chaldees constitution and the once impressively-curated infrastructure of the settlement to a shadow of its previous self. His Supremacy is, therefore, compelled to decree that the Chaldees constitution can no longer be acknowledged, recognising, however, the full and absolute sovereignty and authority of the Ramasarish Pharaohate of Mihyaar.

The below is a prepared statement composed by the Pharaoh, Ur-Sahar-Maharaj, to his citizenry in the realm of Almaris:

“Ur-Sahar Maharaj, Pharaoh of Mihyaar, by the grace of Raum, be this bill written and delivered to the blessed subjects of the realm of Chaldees.

I am impelled by my sense of alarm at the security of our village, but bated by my zeal and loyalty to my citizenry, to address the termination of the village of Chaldees and all operations which fall under its administration and legislation. The most worrying among our crises is the collapse of the state and senate system which, over a period of successive years fell to inactivity and stagnancy, which interferes with my and my ministers’ ability to fulfil our duties dedicated to the blessed citizenry.

The penultimate crisis which has necessitated the immediate vacation and dissolution of the Chaldees operative is the hazards posed by the Pool of Waste. I cannot, with good conscience, approach the increasing danger of this circumstance in a laissez-faire manner. It behooves me to vacate the premises of Chaldees in the swiftest way possible, that this may not cause unneeded damage to the wellness of my Mihyaari kinsmen.

What specifically lies ahead for us, all of us, in this event—for all of us individually, for all of us together, for the entire world outside of our tightly-wound citizenry—it cannot be predicted. We, alone, are pickpockets, turncoats, and rapscallions, by tradition. Draft-dodgers, money-mongers, and pirates. But, I hope you will find among yourselves, in the spirit of our cultural fore-elder, Ur-Mihyar himself, strength in solidarity. Together, we are masters of a great portion of the South; masters of the land whence the first light of knowledge had shone over the world; masters of the land which is the storehouse of mortal science; masters of the country of impetuous eloquence and subtle intellect.

I am hereby honourably discharged of being dishonourably in-charge.”

Unbeknownst to most avid readers of the Chaldees Dispatch, a small section in the corner of the weekly publication appeared near a tabloid on the economic crisis in Ramasar. It goes, sadly, unnoticed by most of those who subscribe to the paper:

    UR-SAHAR-MAHARAJ (18XX—1887)

Ur-Sahar-Maharaj, Pharaoh of Mihyaar, Prince of Chaldees, is presumed dead today, the Thirteenth of Yathrib’s Day-trip, in the Year of the Cat Eighteen-Eighty-Seven.

Destined to the fate and vocation of Pharaoh-hood by birthright, Lord Sahar was a trailblazer in many respects. Greatest so, in that he initiated the incursion and expansion of the Pharaohate from Ramasar into the Descendant realms. Reports from his daughter, the Grand Vizier of Mihyaar, Ur-Zainab state: much in suit of his decadence, the Pharaoh passed drowning in the bath after failing to rise to the surface, ultimately weighed down in the water by his menagerie of rings, heavy chains, and costume jewellery.

Fitted in funerary regalia, the sovereign's corpse was discreetly sent homeward-bound to Ramasar, to be mummified and displayed in the Hall of Pharaohs. The case of his succession has fallen by the wayside, and is presently undergoing extensive administrative examination, to be determined in the future.

    Spoiler

After dedicating nearly a year writing and curating all the lore and resources for the Mihyaari culture, as well as the better portion of this year playing the character of Ur-Sahar, and—even if for a short stint—leading and developing the culture in-game via Chaldees, I can undoubtedly say it has been my immense honour and pleasure. I'm admittedly unsatisfied that Chaldees, as a project, didn't last as long as I anticipated. But, it served as a good learning experience to benefit from in the future.

I'd like to thank @Melpomenne for partaking in such a large part of this project, as well as @Kujo for holding my hand at the start of this project, and writing lore of his own.

I hope that, long after today, be there Chaldees or not, people will continue to explore new avenues of RP with the culture I've written.

    INDEX

    i. Introduction …

    ii. Activities …

iii. Navigating Chaldees & Date …

    ______________________________________________

    I - INTRODUCTION

After some years reporting to the greater senate of Mihyaar in the distant peninsula of Ramasar, the Pharaoh of Mihyaar and Prince of Chaldees is prepared to truly inaugurate his ascent to Pharaohood with a village-wide series of merriment, merchantry, and… mettle? Be that in search of gold or glory, the Pharaoh, Ur-Sahar, offers to host all and sundry in a festival held in his very hamlet of Chaldees in the southern wastes. For grocers and day-traders, he extends the offer to accommodate them to vend their goods for the duration of the day at a minimal and easily negotiable fee. For prize-fighters and scuffle-seekers, he declares a tourney that shall occur on the day of the festival and which will recur weekly with varying prizes and methods of combat week-by-week. And, for the average day-tripper, he presents a variety of carnival activities and amusements—in particular, beating the hardened desert terrain until water appears for a handsome prize.

    II - ACTIVITIES

    MERCHANTS AND COMMERCE

Goods from all corners of Almaris and all walks of society will be hosted and touted in Chaldees, a particular hotbed of commercial activity. These will occur through vendors both sourced in the village and outside of it, providing a menagerie of wares and merchandise both to be temporarily accommodated and marketed in the festival. To set up shop in the village and its surrounding land for the day, reach the Pharaoh, Ur-Sahar. Applicants to host their merchantry in Chaldees for the festival will be exempt from tax for the following two weeks if they are able to actively sell and maintain the shop.

    TOURNAMENT

Hear all ye’ tough and mighty! A test of fortitude and martial prowess shall be held on the day of the festival as the centre of the occasion—a tournament. This occasion will occur weekly following the day of the festival. The chosen style of combat will be armoured fist-fighting. But, if the number of applicants for the tournament exceeds eight, weapons may be employed if agreed upon by both parties. The winner of the tourney will receive the honourable title of the Champion of Chaldees, and the two runner-ups—that is, the second and third best—will be compensated individually. A five mina fee will be deducted from all applicants to participate.

    Prizes will include:

For the champion of the tournament, the individual will be awarded the above title of the Champion of Chaldees, alongside one-hundred mina.

For the second-best or runner-up for the champion of the tournament, the individual will be awarded with fifty mina, and the temporary alchemical services of the Pharaoh (one adept item, two novice items).

For the third-best, the individual will be awarded with tax exemption for the subsequent two weeks. If they are not a resident of Chaldees, they will receive a home of their choice with one week of tax exemption.

    Spoiler

All combat will be mechanical and performed in full-plate without weapons. CRP may be performed if both parties agree to it and that a respectable standard of roleplay is maintained. Likewise, if the number of participants exceeds eight, weapons may be employed.

    GAMES AND AMUSEMENT

A menagerie of traditional carnival games will be employed for the participation of all visitors of the inaugural festival. This includes, but is not limited to; a test of archery and bow coordination, which will leave participants with the satisfaction of dunking the Pharaoh of Mihyaar in a vat of water sourced from the infamous Chaldees Pool of Waste; a test of luck and lumbar power, which will require one to apply their absolute brute muscle into drilling the earth with a sword until water appears, awarding the individual with the coveted title and responsibilities of Minister of Waterworks of Mihyaar—a title which allows sizeable sway; and many more.

III - NAVIGATING CHALDEES AND DATE

This festival will occur in the ninetieth year of the Second Age, during the First Seed. In order to navigate to Chaldees, take the northern road from the Southern Travel Hub, and take the road to the former Sultanate, and go directly ahead at the intersection. A map has been provided below.

    Spoiler

The festival will occur on Friday the 20th, 18:00 (6:00pm) EST. However, you may appear to set up your tent and trade from 17:00 (5:00pm). It is recommended to arrive a half hour in advance to mechanically set your tent/market stall up. Please contact me at Hephaestus#8435 on Discord to set up a time to apply for a tent so we may meet IRP and that I might give you region permissions. Reach me for the Chaldees Discord invitation.

The below map is relative to South Hub as the starting point. Take the road leading to the former Sultanate or Cadmasra.

Were it not for the benevolence of the ruler of Chaldees, Sahar ... the thing would have surely seen to destruction on my little store!

Sahar, enervated by the day's incursion, expressed a cheshire grin followed by a prattling 'hek-hek-hek' cackle as sweeping, heavy-lidded eyes skimmed the contents of the notice. He descended from his study, waddling across to a posterboard to pin the leaflet.

  4. The moon is, indeed, as often desolate places are, lonely. A place for old men, consigned to oblivion. Old men who have failed.

Much in the fashion of the wretches which participate in this walk of life—more accurately, unlife—Vittorio moped, pace by pace printing the outline of his bare, talc-dusted toes on the lunar body's stony surface. Would that he frowned, but the space between heaven and earth had cooled his mind, destroyed the impulsiveness that had led him to here, and made him aware of the too obvious pointlessness.

For many minutes a day, he walked and would fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way, ticking away at the moments which made up his day and the rest of his dull, dull days. And from many miles away, he thought on the life that could have been.

I should probably get onto reading it. I hear the narrative style is weird.

The several narrative styles can sometimes feel samey, admittedly. Stoker's use of journal entries and letters to tell the story is certainly interesting.

The Alchemist seems like a common trend in this thread. I really did not enjoy it.

Yeah, I picked it up before a flight and tried to get into it again recently. Maybe I was reflecting on the book from rose-tinted glasses because I didn't enjoy it as much.

  7. Favourite book or author?

My favourites ebb and flow invariably so it's difficult to determine. I'm unsure if this counts as far as authors go, but my hands-down favourite writer has to be Adonis. From the western world, I'd say maybe F. Scott Fitzgerald.

All in all, probably Concerto Al-Quds by Adonis.

The first book you read, or the first one you remember reading?

Might've been The Alchemist. One could probably imagine from my username but, I started off reading a lot of mythology, so probably Percy Jackson too.

Books you want to read but haven’t got around to?

A writer—artist—I admire a lot but unfortunately haven't gotten around to enjoying the work of whom is Gustave Doré. I've been hoping to read London: a Pilgrimage for some time now. More recently though, I've been wanting to read The Lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay.

List some others you have read and talk about them:

My recent reads (over the summer), new and old, are as follows. I had to check myself to make sure I wasn't being too pretentious.

    The Death of Ivan Ilyich:

I read this book, surprisingly, for the first time in an evening while at the beach recently. The events of the book are told simply, being a good refresher read after other Tolstoy works which can sometimes be hard to keep up with. 4/5

    Tender is the Night:

Fitzgerald’s prose never fails to leave me stunned, pure and simple. A tragedy which sometimes feels almost candy-flavoured. Despite being one of my favourite books, it’s  sometimes inconsistent and disjointed. 3.5/5

    Dracula:

I find myself going back to Bram Stoker’s Dracula a lot, just because it’s without a doubt my favourite piece of vampire media. Every piece of the puzzle fits together to give you a suspenseful, well-paced horror show. 5/5

  8.

With indications of war running high in good Orenia, U. Sahar neglects the sentiment of shaving to promote free-spiritedness among Orenian locals. He flashes peace signs as he sashays through Vienne, joining Exalted Derfey's protesting the imminent war:

    "Make love, not war!"

    "We hate war!"

"The Canonists will not attack us! The Haenseni will not attack us!"

    THE WHITE LADY

    IOz16JT2n_-9vbiet1qMtLrGiYW51AeH72DfvxhuK663y3ualE2gDvn6m6e1O8BLfn1vsKOjk27rLWpBJyLQwa71dKLpfwBycrQyKXA_TjJW_k4wje3nRHNbMLv_wjKRHQIwj0D3SuEHWgcdvQ

The White Lady came riding through the woods on her white horse, and then disappeared as soon as I saw her.

The White Lady is the ghost of a noble lady from Haense, and she haunts the forests of Dobrov. She’s very tall, and she’s as pale as moonbeams, but her hair is darker than blackness. She only ever comes out at night-time, and she’s so quiet that you might think she’s just a bit of cloud in the trees.

The Lady rides around on the ghost of her horse, which is just as white as she is. Both of them are very skittish  - when I first tried to say hello, they disappeared into the woods in the blink of an eye.

I don’t know how she died, or what exactly her powers are, but she seems like a nice spirit, if a little bit shy. I believe, though, that she’s the magical protector of the lake in Dobrov, because she was riding away from it when I spotted her, and the lake is always covered in moonbeams. Please give her lots of space, and don’t come too close if you do spot her.

An erstwhile Dobrov resident sweat profusely as he read the codex entry with stunned eyes. "She was not supposed to escape! How in the blazes did she escape? Godfrey's knickers, she was not meant to escape!"
