    How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Metagaming is finding out information that your character couldn't possibly know (i.e other people's plans that haven't yet been revealed to you via roleplay) and using it to your advantage.
    How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Powergaming is essentially FRP and; it is ignoring characteristics / traits of characters, controlling other people's characters and / or doing unrealistic things.

Herewyn took a second to gather her bearings in the port. Before her is a bazaar, and certainly the key to what she's looking for on this trip. Two hundred miles across the ocean for-

 

A well-dressed gentleman catches her eye with a big smile.  “Welcome!” He began. “What brings you to this lovely city? Adventure? Wealth? Or some grand aspirations to elevate your place in society?”

 

She stops for a second, startled; she didn't expect to achieve the goal of her trip so soon. Herewyn returns the smile and says, "Thank you, kind sir," While speaking, she assess his twinkling eyes and jovial appearance and decides on her tact. "I am just here on family business, to pick up the last items for my sister's wedding in a fortnight."

 

There. He seems the kind to appreciate the family-oriented type. And now, at least, she have a reason to quickly depart if needed.
