How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: Metagaming is often the act of using your own knowledge as if it was your character's. Being unable to differentiate from what your character might know to what you yourself know. Say, you know that the man in front of you, who is your friend in real life, is playing an evil character! But your character doesn't know that. If you act like the friendly bartender in front of you is an eldritch monster in the middle of a town square, it'd definitely be metagaming. Maybe could've phrased that one better.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Powergaming is the act of playing out an action without showing any attempt/will, usually done against other characters. I've often seen it happen in combat situations. Powergaming may also refer to a player making their character do something that they cannot normally do, such as getting a sudden speed upgrade. Say I'm a traveler, and I'm getting attacked by bandits! If I'm sick and tired of bandits and roleplay something like "(Character) Disappears into the shadows!", that'd be powergaming. If I *attempted* to hide from the bandits, it wouldn't be powergaming.
