Simon Birchenwald was born sometime in 1643, in the brand-new city of Ruriksgrad, the illegitimate son of a Heartlander citizen- Ellen Sterling- and an unknown man. His childhood was less than idyllic, but Simon was not neglected. He was, however, called names for being fatherless and often shunned by other children. One name (Birch-forest, for his voluminous head of yellow hair) stuck, and Simon took it for his surname. He grew to be a healthy young man, skilled in architecture and brewery.
Sterling begrudgingly raised him to the age of 17, at which point she figured he could fend for himself and sent him away. Having no money and only the clothes on his back, Simon decided that finding a profession would be a good idea. He currently is a wanderer, looking for a place to work and stay.
