It was around midnight when a small boat arrived at the pier. Only the old woman who sat there every night noticed it. When she looked into the boat, she saw a young man lying on the floor. He was unconscious. She took him to her little hut, which only she knew of, and there he slept the whole night through.
In the morning, the young man woke up. He felt sick and dizzy. The old woman stepped beside the bed and held her hand to his forehead - it was glowing.
“Where am I... who are you?” he asked.
“Don't worry, boy, you're safe here,” the old woman replied. “You should rest first. We can talk when you have fully recovered.”
The young man stayed in bed, feeling better day by day.
After 6 days he was able to get up again. He went out of the room and saw the old woman sitting at a wooden table.
“Please sit down,” she said, whereupon he sat down in front of her. “So, why were you in the boat?”
He tried to remember, but almost everything was gone.
"I don't know... it was burning... something was burning down." He stared at the little cracks in the table. "They told me to run... so I ran. That's all I can think of right now."
She asked for his name, to which he responded: "Aurelian".
The old woman then gave him a gold ring that she had found in the boat with the young man some days ago. The ring bore the image of a lion with a crown, sword and shield and had the word “Aurelian” engraved on it.
“This must be yours then, my dear,” said the old woman.
Aurelian took the ring and inspected it carefully. “I think my father gave it to me," he replied. "A long time ago."
A few seconds passed until he stood up and looked out the window. "What is this place?"
"You should find out yourself my dear. There is a lot for you to explore." She smiled and for some reason, he knew it was an honest smile. He never met a person, who felt so strange and familiar at the same time.
"I will. Thank you for taking care of me."
In order to find his true identity, he set off into the world, where he would experience many adventures.
