In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: In regards to accidently making my character overpowered, I tend to keep a notepad open with information of my characters abilities. When I am doubtful that my character could reasonably do something, I tend to just default to they are unable to. For example, could (insert character) be a good cook? Well, they don't have mention of cooking in their backstory, and no reason to have regularly cooked in the past, so I can default to them being a terrible cook.

As for controlling other characters actions, I check myself and make sure the way I'm describing things isn't forcing other characters into certain actions
As an example of what not to do:
"The smoke was thick, and caused everyone's noses to wrinkle up in disgust."

Instead I'd say something like this:
"The smoke was think, with a putrid noxious scent."

This still tells others that the smoke smells unpleasant, but doesn't directly control their character's actions.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: It ruins a lot of surprise/suspense. Even if I know a certain character is the BBEG, It's a lot more fun if my character doesn't. A big part of roleplaying is your own character learning things.

Of course, it can also ruin other's experiences! Someone could be building up for a backstory reveal and then... someone's character spoils it despite having no reason of knowing it.
    Status: Accepted

Character Name: Egan Baxorson
Character Race: Human
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 22
Physical Description: A lean man with dirty brown hair. Covered in small nicks and scars from farm work. Wears cheap looking clothes. 5'8", 120 lbs.
Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

Example: (delete this)

"Ah, aint much t' talk 'bout, now is there? Grew up on m' family's farm long ways 'way from any major city. Peaceful life, y'know? Raising animals 'n stuff... but I always was a bit more adventurous then th' rest of them. Was always th' one who'd go further into the woods t' hunt. Was always th' one who wanted t' hear about the world most outta all m' cousins n' siblin's. Guess now I just t' see a bit o' the world before I gotta take over."

*He pauses, taking a sip from his canteen.*

"Aint like I don't wanna, just aint ready for th' responsibility. Maybe I'll find me a wife on m' journey, too. Who knows, y'know? Maybe I'll even bring sumthin' real life changin' back t' th' farm.*
