Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”
((How do you respond?))
"My story? You don't know it?" Ashlan scoffs. "Well, that's what I'm here for I guess! I'm a fencer you see. I was the /best/ in my town, and it was a bustling place let me tell you. Never seen a place larger, not even this city here! When we all sat around the campfire there were dozens and dozens of us, all singing along."
His eyes soften a tad, catching the flames of the burning candles in their reflections. He leans back.
"Give me a sword and I'll give you the time of your life! That's what everybody knew me as. It was my thing! But I had to be out hunting when my home got raided. Hate those shamans. They must've waited, I know it!" he raises his voice, gesturing wildly, "For me to be gone. Cowards. Well when I got back, there wasn't much. My sister lived by playing dead, I think, and she had to go walking off to some of our neighbors to get a place to stay. I have to do her proud, right? So I'm here to show the world my prowe-" - cough - "Find the towns of this land, get into tournaments and provide for little Sylie that way! There can't be anybody much harder to face than Baril, he was the worst with his jabs," a breath. "Right...I'm nice like that, you see. Have to provide. Head of the household now and all." He nods to himself.
"So, do point me in the direction of somewhere ready to receive a champion, if you will! I won't disappoint," Ashlan finishes, with an arrogant smile. He sits there for a moment still dwelling in the exuberance of his fanciful claims, till his expression fades in the candlelight. He begins to look around the tent, suddenly leery of the place, shrinking back a little.
"As long as there isn't too much magery in any such town, I hope. Hate that stuff. You aren't a- a mage, are you? I- I should get going..."
