Garrick was raised as a heartlanderUnlike most nobles, he elected to enlist in the gentry during the Third Atlas Coalition War. During the raid on Nordengrad, he left his battalion behind to defend another soldier a long distance away. The soldier had lost his shield and had no cover against an oncoming hailstorm of arrows. Garrick protected the both of them, and the soldier lived, but Garrick took arrows to the thigh and shoulder. He retreated to the medical tent to treat his wounds, where he found his whole battalion dead on the tables, having perished courtesy of a catapult. Wracked with the shame of abandoning his fellow soldiers and survivor’s guilt, he abandoned the battlefield, unable to face his Uncle and cousins. He was proclaimed dead, having perished in combat, though his body was never found. After shedding his title and any sign that he was once a noble, he changed his name. Now, using the skills he learned in the gentry, he works as a mercenary, living from contract to contract. He can be found in the tavern of whatever city he’s in, drowning his memories and sorrows in ale while embracing his new societal role as a peasant. Deep down, however, he dreams of fighting for something larger than himself again.
