Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

He lowers himself onto the offered cushion and peels his damp shirt away from his skin as the heat and the heavy air close in around him. Candle smoke stings his eyes, but he doesn’t look away.
“I’m just a carpenter from the valley.” he says, resting his rough hands on his knees. “A month ago, my sister vanished. I found her locket caught on thorns where the swamp begins. That’s what brought me here.”
He lifts his gaze to the hag. His eyes are tired but focused.
“I’m not chasing magic or fortune.” he adds quietly. “People told me you know the paths out there. I just need to know which way she went.”
