In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Even in the wildest of fantasy settings there is only so much one man can do alone. The most powerful mage can still get beaten in a melee duel, the greatest duelist can and should lose to the archer, etc. Understanding the capabilities of your character and of those you roleplay with is key to understanding your limits, and letting other people shine. Failure can be just as entertaining as winning in most scenarios.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Imagine you are watching a play, like Romeo and Juliet. Imagine if Juliet knew Romeo wasn't dead, or the duelists knew the futility of their fight. Those would be awful scenes to watch. So to with metagaming, not only does it spoil upcoming twists in the storyline, or ruin potential arcs, it makes the entire roleplay fall flat around it.

Character Name: Gili
Character Race: Highlander
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 23
Physical Description: Brown Hair, 5'9, Athletic build, brown eyes, Traveling furs and leathers modified to act as basic armor.
Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

Gili let out a relieved sigh as he collapsed into the provided cushion. His body was practically at it's limit after trudging through swampland for what seemed like hour's on end. "Alright, but if you're expecting me to pay for some charlatan's ruse, you're going to be disappointed. Spent my last bit of coin on some dried meat a few days ago", he explained with a grunt, shifting in place. "Name is GIli, I've been wandering for a few years now since I left my dad back at home in Norland. Just, trying to follow the work I guess. Speaking of work, do you have any idea if anyone needs a woodsman, or a hunter? I'm pretty handy with an Axe, and I'm not the worst shot with any sort of bow either."
