Foster Varham is the son of a Highlander father and a Heartlander mother. Years ago, Foster's mother, Abigail, fell for one Eddard Varham on one of his trading visits to town. After meeting the raven-haired beauty, Eddard's visits into the civilized world became much more frequent. The two were absolutely smitten with each other. So much so that Eddard was able to convince his beloved Abigail to leave the civilized world and live among the wilderness with him. Life proved so peaceful for the two that they decided to have a child just to fill in the endless silence! And so, with the help of a neighboring druid (assuming druids exist in this world), the child was born, bearing the name of a Heartlander and the surname of a Highlander.
Growing up, Foster developed a close relationship with his parents, his father most of all. Every action he took, he took in order to make him proud. And proud he was of this child, who inherited his father's golden hair and his mother's sun-kissed skin. Eddard had always wanted a son, and to him Foster was that dream being realized. As he grew into adolescence, Eddard began taking Foster with him on his trips into town, showing him how to get the best prices for game, how to avoid scam artists, the works. However, Foster's social ineptitude is something that followed him well into adulthood.
However, this is backstory. If everything when smoothly, then it wouldn't make for an interesting character, now would it? On a day like any other, Eddard and Foster returned home to find their hut aflame and Abigail hanging from a tree. Overcome with grief and rage, the two experienced trackers hunted down the aggressors, happening upon their camp in the night. They waited for the perfect opportunity to descend upon their prey, watching the bandits count the meager spoils that were stolen from their home. Before long, it was time to strike. In the ambush, the bandits didn't know what hit them. Even in his blind rage, every one of Foster's arrows found their mark. But his father wasn't so lucky. After the small bandit party was felled, Foster turned to see the axe embedded in his father's stomach. That night, Foster had to bury both of his parents. That's something no man should have to admit. So Foster never does.
