Emeline Trea is a new heartlander coming from a family of highlanders. She wanted a more lively life, not only the simple things. While she came from a simple life, she wants to be wealthy and make a name for herself, and not from the biggest fish caught. Her family has disowned her, and her father gave her a cut on her lip so she will always see her past on her face. Her mother had mercy, telling him not to scar her face more than it had. The night when she left, she took one of the few rings her mother had worn, one for each child. She had an older brother and a younger sister, being the middle child. She wears it at all times, and is very emotionally connected to it. She doesn’t like the dark at all, all confidence being lost in the darkness. If she’s with others, and even the smallest amount of light is available, she gets confident once more, but alone, she is utterly helpless. Hoping to find work, she heads to more advanced civilization, curious what it has in store for her.

They duck into one of the shacks, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the small room, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town?" She begins, then pauses to study their face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a chair, “Where do you come from? What do you hope to make of yourself?”
