In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Powergaming ruins the fun for all players involved by placing unrealistic feats onto a character that paints them as "unbeatable". To avoid powergaming from both a giving and receiving standpoint—it is vital to always keep in mind the foundations of your character. If your character is a naive elf who lacks combat experience, they likely have never, and would not be able to take on a dragon! Understanding that such feats can be built up to as the character themselves grows their strength and flourishes later down the road in their story. However, dealing with a player who seems to implement this rule-breaking—it is best to remind them that it is against LOTC's rules and instructing them how to better go about approaching their character.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Metagaming, likewise to powergaming, ruins the fun for all players involved via disrupting the flow of the story that the players are attempting to tell. It ruins the anticipation and, at times, planning that goes into roleplay. There is mystery to the unknown, and build-up that centers a lot of pivotal points in a story. What fun would it be if the hero simply happened to "know" where the antagonist was hiding because he "caught wind" of his location? Or, likewise, that the antagonist "just so happened" to know each of the hero's weakness? Roleplay itself is a creative writing tool that is at its most potential when it is utilized to grow the story. It should never be used in any circumstance to be used as a power-trip.

Character Name: Lycoris Nemys
Character Race: Dark Elf
Character Gender: Prefer not to say.
Character Age: 23
Physical Description: 5'0" and weighing in at 169lbs - hair platinum white with heterochromia eyes—its right, a vibrant lavender, whilst its left was a sweet crimson.
Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

The scent was nothing short of abysmal, yet nothing the dark elf was not accustomed to. After all, such environments were only typical in a few choice drows lifespans. Nonetheless, the peace that the blanket of night brought on was not to last. After all, Lycoris certainly wasn't about to let its presence go unknown as she passed the threshold into the rather damp enclosure. "BEHOLD! Do not allow your spine to tremble just yet, for we—" A croak in the darkness, one familiar to the maehr as a child of the Moon, yet this croak accompanied a voice. Interrupting the rather shrieking introduction—for better, or for worse was up to the denizens of the aforementioned dingy town—yet, no matter, did it continue. "Well if you had not so RUDELY interrupted us—! Ahem!" Her tone carrying a similar cadence to bare nails scraping against rusted iron, yet carrying nothing short of the haughty air of even the most distinguished kings. "As you seemed to be expecting me, we assume you know plenty of my dastardly and impressive feats huuuum?"

An elongated pause. Only the creak of the forestry just near outside welcomed its inquiry.

". . . Humph! Well, I am currently traveling in searches for a mentor. One who could amplify our ever growing pursuit in regards to the arcana!" Well, more so lack of knowledge regarding the subject overall, but the hag certainly didn't need to know that. Lycoris placed its palm to its chest, the bag kept to her side clinking with the rustle of glass scraping against one another. The candles that barely illuminated the frame of the pair was hardly needed to gauge the spirit that danced with the very flames. Wherever the night took her, was she certainly prepared to take it all in stride.
