In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: A good general rule is to always keep the setting and its boundaries in mind along with who you're roleplaying with, the abilities (and weaknesses)of your character, and the good ol' "would doing this upset people?" instinct.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: metagaming interrupts natural consequences, cool interpersonal roleplay, and the opportunity to work situations out fairly with friends! Everyone else you're roleplaying with expects you to act as one would IN the setting, acting outside of it not only sucks the fun out of things for others and their opportunity to engage with it, but also encourages others to do the same. Then you get a lot of upset folks who were waiting to further relationships for information, ruin secrets, and spoil suprises.

Character Name: Coleman O'Cormac
Character Race: Human
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 23
Physical Description: Coleman is a rough and tumble man in worker's commoner clothes. He's solidly built, 5' 10, brown-eyed, and wears a shag cut tied in red ribbon.
Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

"Me? Been waiting for me?" Coleman disregards whatever care he had for asking for directions (or perhaps a hot meal), and promptly plops himself down on the cushion. His eye catches on the twinkling of the surrounding candles. "I haven't done anything bad, have I? I've been trying real hard not to have any run-ins with the law after the last few times," He chuckles, "A joke. Just jokin'."

He begins to take his boots off, shaking some caked dirt away and on to the floor.

"Oh, I'm Coleman by the way. Coleman O'Cormac," He holds out his hand for a shake. It may be better to politely decline if one were worried about things like dirt and suspect stains. "Or maybe you knew that? If you've been expecting me and all. Nice to meet you, I think. Aaaanywho, you didn't happen to see someone like me also passin' through, eh? I'm lookin' for my sibling. We've been lookin' for a place to settle but we got seperated one night and I haven't seen them since."
