Yichen was born to two parents who wanted nothing to do with him. He was an accident, they didn’t want a child– it was too much work! They soon decided to dump him on his mother's parents. For most of his childhood, Yichen lived with his grandparents in a small village by the coasts of Sutica. They were old and retired so things got a little more complicated now that they had a baby on their hands.
His grandparents didn’t have much money, so they didn't have much to eat and barely got by. Even so, they both treasured him and tried to bring him little sweets and trinkets whenever they could. His grandfather, like a good amount of other Suticans, loved construction and creating unique architectures– though his grandfather did this in the form of miniatures. Naturally, he taught Yichen all the tips and tricks on how to make structurally sound yet still beautifully unique miniature buildings, dreaming to one day build their miniatures in great size. His grandmother was fond of keeping history remembered and culture alive. She taught Yichen about Sutica's great immigration from Axios to Atlas, about the Sutican War, and wonderful things about Sutica's culture.
Sadly, after he turned 10, both of his grandparents had passed away. His grandfather's dream just a dream. After their deaths he resided in an orphanage, not much of interest happened in his time there. He was to be adopted twice, but was too "talkative" and "nosy" for both families tastes.
The rest of the years spent there was uneventful, but one day, the caretaker was somehow able to contact close members from his family. His uncle, or his father’s brother. He was surprised, and so was his uncle. He didn’t know he had more family! His uncle also didn’t know his brother had a child. Understandably, he was furious that his brother had just dumped this poor child with his old grandparents. After a while of getting to know each other through his uncle’s various visits to the orphanage, his uncle (now father) took him in.
While living with his aunt and uncle in Providence, Oren, they taught him the art of baking. He quickly fell in love. He had never been able to eat much tasty food, and now he was able to make his own for a reasonable price!
In present times, Yichen often travels around the lands learning whatever is interesting to him– but mostly about the traditional recipes made and served the places he visits– and occasionally comes back home to visit his adoptive parents.
Yichen is a bit startled by his booming voice, but offers the man a light smile. "Oh, thanks sir! You have a loud voice." he tilts his head, "Ah, well to be honest, I don't really have a set goal for why I'm here." he points to himself, "I just travel! But maybe adventure, that was an option right? Yeah, that fits I guess. I'm mostly just here for the.. Flow, I think. Uh, maybe wealth too actually now that I think of it.. Yeah that's alright. You never know, you never do! Or you might know a little bit if you have a plan but I- I don't, so." He shrugs.
Yichen laughs feet shifting a bit, "Aiyah, sorry sir, rambled a lil bit.. Anyways, I'll be on my way!" He waves before starting to walk away but abruptly stops, turning back "Oh actually- uh, Mister Sir, do you perhaps know any... Bakers or food make-ers in the area?"
