In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Metagaming would be using certain knowledge that was learnt outside of the roleplaying context to gain an advantage in said context.

Erik Bugman came from a distant nation in the hopes of rebuilding his family business and reclaiming the life that was once his.  Urguan could very well be the opportunity that he has waited for for so many years.  He was born in a small mountain village, where his family owned a fairly famous brewery.  He spent his early years working in the mines to make a name for himself while deciding what his future goals might be before finally settling on taking over the brewery after a years-long apprenticeship under his father's tutelage.  As the years passed and his trade routes expanded, so did the name of Bugman over the neighbouring regions.

Erik's arrival to Urguan was, sadly, the result of a rather unfortunate incident where his family's village suffered tremendous damage due to a natural phenomenon.  Fearing for his future survival, he decided to travel to the distant lands he had heard so much about while growing up as a young Dwarf in the hopes of rebuilding his family's fortune and brewery company.  As many of his kin, Erik is a follower of Yemekar, ruler of the Pantheon, although he could not be described as a very devout follower.  He tends to be suspicious of strangers due to past experiences with bandits and charlatans.

Character Name: Erik Bugman
Character Race: Mountain Dwarf
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 52
Physical Description: Erik is an average-sized dwarf male. He typically wears his late father's armour when travelling. He has green eyes and is built fairly sturdily.
Roleplay Scenario:

Looking up to the well-dressed stranger, Erik forces a smile upon his face despite his general unease around people he does not know.  "I am actually here on business matters.  Would you be so kind as to point me in the direction of the trader's guild?"
