In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: I avoid powergaming by reminding myself that my character isn’t perfect and shouldn’t control everything around them. I only describe what I attempt to do, not the outcome or how other characters react. I let my character fail, get hurt, or be wrong because those moments make the story more interesting. I keep their abilities realistic and consistent with who they are, and I never use information my character wouldn’t realistically know. I react to situations in a believable way and accept the consequences of my actions instead of trying to “win” every scene. Most importantly, I share the spotlight and let everyone have moments to shine so the story feels collaborative rather than competitive.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: When I use information that I know as a player but my character would never realistically know, it gives me an unfair advantage and forces outcomes that don’t make sense in-character. It can ruin tension, spoil mysteries, and make other players feel like their choices don’t matter because I’m reacting with knowledge my character didn’t earn. Instead of the story unfolding through actions, clues, and character interactions, it becomes artificially steered by out-of-character knowledge, which damages immersion and makes the roleplay feel less collaborative and less believable.
