In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: You avoid this by describing the action ones character is attempting. For example, "Tom leans back with a snarl before slamming his head forward in an attempt to headbutt John." This way it's clear you aren't forcing an outcome to happen and the action could very well fail.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Our characters aren't us. Just because we know something doesn't mean they do. Metagaming ruins immersion and can really kill the roleplay aspect. It also means you aren't roleplaying from your characters perspective and then you're just undermining the whole roleplay idea.

Character Name: John Townsend
Character Race: Heartlander
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 23
Physical Description: John is 5'9", and weighs in at 145 lbs. He has black hair and light blue eyes. His usual outfit is a long sleeved shirt with pants.
Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

Example: "Well, My name is John Townsend. I'm a farmer like my father before me, and his father before him. I'm 23 years of age, and farmin' is just about the only thing I know, though my father taught me to read and write. I did use my pa's bow once or twice to scare off some wolves who were slinking about one time though. I'm getting carried away.." I finally stop and take a deep awkward breath.

"Oh, I just, uh…" you stutter, tensing up. You eye the crone, then back outside the tent. For a moment, the air thickens with anticipation, until…
