In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: I honestly don't run into the issue that often because to me, seeing my character "lose" in a situation is often as or more interesting than seeing them "win."
For example, even when I play a character with strong magic powers, I may have her take on challenges above her station, fail, and face serious consequences such as a permanent injury (I did this recently ha).
That said, I do make my best effort to try and intuit the other player's expectations from a scene. I also make it a rule to never say that the other character does or feels something - how my character's action effects them is for them to decide.
For example saying "When Jana pleads with you, she puts on her most perfect and practiced heartbreaking expression" rather than "Her anguished look pireces your heart and makes you want to give in to her pleas." Basically, focus on what the character can do and why it might work, rather than just saying it does.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: It breaks the logic of the story. If a character isn't making decisions based on what they know, then they start to look quite irrational - even if the outcome for them is "good." A character who just magically knows stuff is a less interesting character. It's also unfair if everyone else is trying to play grounded characters and you're like, omniscient.

Character Name: Meghana
Character Race: Farfolk
Character Gender: Female
Character Age: 20
Physical Description: Short and scrawny with messy hair that falls to her chin, giving her a boyish look. Tan freckled skin and dark eyes. Well-worn, self-repaired clothes.
Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

Meg's face lights up with a wide grin. "Greetings!" She drops her body into the cushion, falling fluidly into a lazy pose. "I'm sure you've heard this story before, somehow the-" she twitches her head to the side and squints at the crone. "You were expecting me? Word certainly gets around fast here." She shakes, and her face is glowing with warmth again. "- captain didn't find enough coin for a full crew both ways. Guess he figured I wouldn't put up much fight." She leans forward and whispers, as though exchanging a secret. "I don't think he expected me to make it this far, had me up in the rigging more time than I was on deck." She shrugs. "Anyway, I've been drifting town to town, and someone in this one told me you needed an extra set of hands."
