Relyk Greatkin doesn't know how his life started - only how he got to where he is now. Being a bastard child, he never knew his parents and thus was raised by the Slums of of the Under-Realm. As an infant he was passed from family to family and sometimes person to person; after miraculously surviving until adolescence he was on his own. During this adolescence he had only the streets to teach him. Although he is exceptionally intelligent and able to blend into society, he does not have a formal education.
Naturally this does not bode well for the developing of a charismatic youth. Relyk learned to be jaded and calculating from the start. As much as he does not wish ill upon anyone his discomfort grows exponentially given he has to spend any more time around unfamiliar faces than is necessary. Too many times was Relyk wronged and cheated in his childhood to have not adapted this way as a survival mechanism more than anything. Relyk, thus, typically gives off a short and callous attitude to keep people at bay when he really just can not afford to let others take advantage of him. This also lead to him being generally greedy (as one would expect a Dwarf to be), selfish, and self-centered so that he may make the most of each rare victory in life.
Beyond these circumstances, Relyk was not blessed physically either. Where a Dwarf is typically seen as a stocky and generally muscular individual... Relyk simply is not. He is lean and toned from his time spent running in the Slums and laboring in the mines but he had to earn what relatively little muscle he has as he was never properly nourished during his upbringing.
Despite all this, Relyk is not all that he wishes you would think. The few friends that he made over the years, whos names are lost to history, would tell you that after enough time and adjustment Relyk was truly the most loyal and kindhearted individual they had ever known. Relyk keeps close to this stoney ego in order to stay even closer to his dream - that of one day being an accomplished master smith capable of making weapons, armor, and whatever else one's heart may desire. To go into the earth, release it of its riches, and then create a functional and practical peace of art from these spoils is his true goal. At this time, though, all he knows is how to smash rocks and some basic concepts of smelting and forging. Relyk truly does have a lot to learn before realizing his vision.
The only thing standing between Relyk and this goal is the fact that to become a master smith he must have a teacher. Others might not see this as a problem but, once again due to his experience, Relyk is gravely afraid of being betrayed and left behind as so many others have done unto him and, much to his chagrin, as he has had to do to some choice and unfortunate souls. Only time will tell if Relyk can overcome this metaphysical monster and pursue what he knows to be his purpose and destiny.
Relyk looks the gentleman up and down carefully and thinks momentarily before opening his mouth. "I come in search of..." he pauses briefly as he thinks a moment more, "a teacher. I wish to study the art of blacksmithing!"
