Helena Morozova grew up on a farm in the fertile region held by the Empire of Man. Her family is Haeseni in origin, and as such, her family bears considerable resentment towards the Empire of Man. Helena's maternal grandfather was killed during the original conflict between the Empire of Man and the Kingdom of Haense, and her mother, Anna, frequently engaged in risky anti-Church discussions with other Haeseni families. Helena is the eldest of 4 siblings. She was meant to marry a man named Andrey who was set to inherit a stable and farm near her family's own, but Andrey disappeared a few months before their wedding with all of his belongings, leaving the stables & farm to his younger brother. Helena's parents planned to simply marry her to the younger brother instead, but Helena didn't find the idea especially appealing, so she took a page out of Andrey's book and disappeared, intending to build her own farm independent of marriage contracts and inheritance clauses.
The traveller has just arrived in a small town. As they look around, their gaze is met with run down houses and shops. They duck into one of the shacks, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the small room, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town?" She begins, then pauses to study their face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a chair, “Where do you come from? What do you hope to make of yourself?”

The travel-worn woman's shoulders pull inward. She curls her arms around herself cautiously, freckled hands tugging at the rough linen cloth of her dress. She glances back at the exit, angling her body as if to leave, before she thinks better of it and takes a seat. "You've been expecting me?" the woman asks, letting go of her dress briefly only to run a hand through her thick brown hair instead. "Do you say that to every stranger, or did a man named Andrey come through and tell you so? I'm looking for him. I'm sure he knows that. I've been hoping that it's his desire. Well, his hope. For me to come looking for him."
The woman takes a deep breath, fanning her cheeks and smiling apologetically. "I'm sorry. Don't concern yourself with my petty issues, ma'am, I'm only here temporarily on my way out east."
She crosses her legs at the ankles, gripping the sides of the chair. She's restless, biting her lip.
