In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Powergaming manifests in two major areas: involving one's own character, and involving others'.

The former can be avoided through a sound knowledge of the limitations of the character you're playing. No-one is perfect, and characters' capacities should reflect that -- a hulking giant is not going to be able to squeeze through narrow spaces, and a novice to a new hobby won't excel on their first attempt. A character that has an exceptional capacity in any area (such as musculature, intelligence or height) should face the drawbacks that come with them, and these traits should never be given for the sole OOC purpose of gaining an edge over others' characters. Flaws are important -- carrying this logic through interactions creates opportunity to develop a character's skillset over time, which will make roleplay experiences more fruitful in the long term.

The second form of powergaming involves interacting with others' characters. Simply put, other players need to have room to appropriately respond to events that are happening in roleplay. The phrasing of emotes which directly impact another player's character should be left open-ended in order to provide leeway for a counteraction (ie. do not write as though an action was successful, write out the effort to do one), particularly during combat roleplay.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: The spread of information is a vital piece to any narrative. Isolating it from the nuanced circumstances around it, metagaming is cheating -- through it, you remove the journey to learn important knowledge and skip right to the ending. If players are acting on information they only know about from beyond the diegetic story world, they are smothering the effort that other players put in to create unique situations, which can be annoying at best and demotivating at worst.

When metagaming enters a roleplay scene, it becomes incredibly hard to create storylines with any kind of deceit, manipulation or surprise. As anticipation, anxiety and surprise are the key elements of narrative interest, removing these aspects by having an unfairly knowledgeable character -- even if it's just for one small scene -- will ruin the fun for players around you.

Character Name: Gyles Vecchiarelli
Character Race: Human
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 35
Physical Description: 5'7", 160 lbs, unathletic build and poor posture. Auburn hair, stark green eyes, wears a layered green tunic.
Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

Gyles meets the hag's eyes with a smile too wide for the derelict town's welcome. He seamlessly takes position opposite of her, arms spreading an array of tightly-bound scrolls between them. "Research," he breathes, eccentric voice rasping like an untuned instrument, "is my purpose."

Unclasping the leather binding securing one of the scrolls, the documentation he'd brought with him was unusual: not an archival log, or a book-keeping record, but an illustrated diagram of categorizations of fauna. "There is much to be learned about the creatures of Aevos... where, and how, they originated. But there is only so much that books can tell me. I must venture into the field to learn firsthand of their origin, create a journal of my travels… and uncover the parallels between them."

The frames of his wide rimmed seeing-glasses caught in the candlelight, veiling the overzealous glint in his eyes.
