Due to the Elsinfhar’s long familial history of prestigious scientists living in Normandor, Alys had been expected to become a prominent scientist by both of her parents. Early on Alys and her sister Fineen were sent away from their hometown, Haelun’or, where her parents moved to in order to teach at Haelun’or College, to a school focusing primarily on training younger students in studying the science of the magical arts in the city of Taliyna’maehr. After years go by, Alys’s scientific interests are discovered to lie in studying the theory of arcane magics, specifically the renegade theory of using electrical magic in an attempt to control the brain and animate artificial life. In an attempt to hide this fascination from her parents, Alys attempts mastering the classic physical sciences, as a means of fulfilling her parents expectations. After time goes on, Alys is able to get by with her knowledge of the classics long enough to get her into Haelun’or College. Once there, Alys is encouraged by her professors to do research in the area that interests her. Upon hearing this, Alys takes a role as a junior researcher under a professor studying the theory of generating electrical magic. As her professor goes on leave for a year, Alys is temporarily positioned as the head of the lab. Unable to control her curiosity, Alys attempts to convince some of the members of her lab to attempt controlling the minds of small animals. Convinced that it was a futile an immoral idea, many of the members of the lab left. Failure after failure led Alys down a dark path, where she became obsessed with her theory of mind control. When the professor came back and discovered Alys’s experiments, in a fit of rage, he informs her parents who attempt to disown her by destroying her inheritance and family name. Simultaneously, he notified the college board who decide to banish her from the university. Years after Alys fails to recruit others in her beliefs, Alys and her sister FIneen flee to the outskirts of an abandoned town, where an old professor of hers mentioned they might find the knowledge they’re looking for.
