Bergulv was born into a successful merchant family based in one of the Northern ports surrounding the City of Haense. His family had managed to marry into low-ranking nobility and buy its way up the social ladder. However, when Bergulv was born his father’s business collapsed. His ships were lost at sea, robbed, or plundered by pirates. Bergulv’s father saw his son’s birth as the cause, and wanted to cast him into the streets. His wife however, protested, and begged him too send Bergulv away to another family. So Bergulv was sent and brought up by his grandfather in the mountains. His grandfather had served the Brotherhood of Saint Karl in his youth, but had a falling out with them and flew to the mountains in exile. Bergulv learned from his grandfather the code of the Saint: strength and courage, and quickly gained interest in the life of a warrior. He practiced with the few village boys, and soon became a skilled fighter, favoring mainly the axe as his weapon. His grandfather was impressed by his progress, and was thinking of sending him to the Brotherhood. But before he could, Bergulv’s grandfather died from sickness, and Bergulv was left with nobody to care for him. Only 18 at the time, Bergulv decided to return to his old family at the fishing ports. When he reached there, however, he learned that his father had been recruited to King Andrew’s army and forced to march into battle, where he was killed. His wife was forced to marry another man, a wealthy merchant, in order to feed her five children. And so Bergulv was without anyone to shelter him and decided to set out into the world as a mercenary, selling his sword for the right price. He is only 18 of age. Young but skillful, and eager for glory.
“Coin,” Bergulv replies, “Coin for my axe.” His hand pats the weapon tucked at his side. “So if you have need for a bodyguard, or another man for your war-company, consider me as a recruit. If you don’t then be off. I don’t have time for empty conversation.”
