    In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: To avoid powergaming, I always try to stay grounded in what my character could realistically do within the world and situation they’re in. Roleplay should feel like a collaborative story, not a competition, so I never force outcomes on other players or act like my character is invincible. Instead of saying something like "swings sword and cuts off your arm," I’ll emote "swings sword toward their arm, aiming to injure"—that way, it leaves space for the other player to respond and keeps things fair and immersive. It’s all about respecting the story and the people you’re writing it with.
    In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Metagaming messes with fair roleplay because it breaks the boundary between what you know and what your character knows. When someone uses OOC info their character shouldn’t realistically have, it can throw off the whole scene and make things feel forced or unfair. Like if a character magically shows up to stop a crime just because the player saw something in Discord—that ruins the tension and takes away from the natural flow of the story. Good RP works best when everyone stays in character and lets things play out based on what their character would actually know or experience in the world.

Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

Lolas lowers their hood, the fabric damp from the mist outside. They glance around the tent, then quietly move to the cushion, settling with careful poise.

“I didn’t think anyone here would recognize me,” they say, voice low and even. “But if you’ve been expecting me, then you already know my path isn’t one I share lightly.”

A pause. The flickering candlelight catches in their eyes.

 

“Still… I’ve come too far to turn back now. If you're truly listening—then I’ll begin.”
