In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: When approaching roleplay of any kind, be it combat, bartering, arguments, persuasion, and tests of power, humor, or authority, I describe the actions, reactions, feelings, and decisions of my character ONLY. It is never my place to determine how another character feels, acts, or reacts to anything I do or say. An example of this would be if my character states that he is a city guard looking for information on the whereabouts of a bandit leader, and me, the player, insisting that everyone in the room is so intimidated by him and his authority that they freely offer the information he seeks. Every conversation has its own natural progression; it should be organic, and require agency for every player in terms of how their character feels/what they think about another character when RP is taking place. When it comes to combat specifically, I try to adhere to this as thoroughly as possible. No immediate K.O's simply because I think my PC's muscles are bigger than my opponent's.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Aside of just breaking immersion for most involved, it also disrupts the natural progression of combat, exploration & discovery, organic story beats, and player achievement, as well as potentially betraying private information obtained in player-player interactions outside of the server. It can happen on accident sometimes, but most instances of meta-gaming in this format are deliberate.
