How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: By communicating directly with my fellow players, and always thinking whether or not my character's actions even make sense. Furthermore, avoiding to force outcomes onto other players can also avoid powergaming. Instead of emoting every outcome for the respective interaction, I would emote both the action and intent of my character's action, perhaps including some justification or reason as to why it is viable, as long as it actually is realistic.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: Metagaming disrupts fair and legitimate roleplay by ruining the very point of what roleplay is about, that being dynamic storytelling. By bringing out-of-character information into roleplay, the entire "plot" of whatever the current roleplay is about loses its meaning and value, not to mention the way that it can make the experience unfair for other players. It can also lead to the blurring of the out-of-character and in-character line, and bringing the roleplay into out-of-character interactions.

You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

Remaining silent until the woman finished her words, the hooded Kael proceeded to sit down with a stoic face and a tardy huff. It had been a long travel, and the way he carried himself showed such. He eyed left and right, scanning his surroundings, and then turned to the hag once more. He querried her not on her expectation of him, but instead began narrating in a slow voice, deep and uninterested "Name's Kael, or at least so they call me. I hail from the lands of the League..." he explained, seemingly referencing the League of Veletz. "... although I've been estranged from my homeland for sometime. Such is the brigand's way, the highwayman's home is the highway." he spoke such without much hesitation. Perhaps he was proud of his unlawful occupation, perhaps not. He paused then, a moment of personal contemplation perhaps. As he stopped talking, so silence fell around them, only the rough cackling of the swamp's wood burning on the nearby campfire surrounding the duo. "Or at least was" he added then "I've decided to switch paths now. The cruelty of the bandit does not fit my spirit, which has been tainted by wrongful actions I have taken. I seek to redeem myself" he paused once more, seemingly for good, and then looked back at the hag. He knew not why he had confessed what he had, perhaps it was a spell, perhaps he had been awaiting someone to ask him such question. Nevertheless, he had decided that it was time to go. Without further word to the hag, he stood up, adjusted his traveling bag, and made back for the road without a stallion to sit atop, only traveling by foot thus far. His longsword sheathed behind his back, the man continued on the path, walking slowly, although with a goal in mind. To redeem himself.
