How do you avoid powergaming in roleplay?: You should always try to keep a fair idea of what your character can actually do in mind, they are almost certainly not going to be some invincible super human and you shouldn't act like they are. You shouldn't force emotes onto other players in combat, like instead of saying *I stab forward, sinking my blade into your chest* you could instead say *I spring forward, stabbing straight towards your chest* it gives the other player the opportunity to decide what happens to their character rather than you forcing it onto them.
Finally you should always try to stay polite if you believe that the other player is powergaming, and can always use a roll to decide the outcome of an action if neither of you can agree.
How does metagaming disrupt fair roleplay?: It ruins any aspect of fairness involved in roleplay, since if one person is using out of rp material to get extra knowledge then it by default puts the other player at a huge disadvantage if they try to be fair. It also fully breaks the flow of rp, since it can put you in a situation where your character can never lose or fail at anything, since you can just look up the best way to approach any given situation, despite what your character would actually know or do.
It's the death of fair and fun rp, as it severely limits characters flaws and unique features and undermines the time and work other players might put into fairly acquiring or learning fun and interesting knowledge or skills.

You’ve just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As you look around, your gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. You duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? she begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

((How do you respond?))

"Honestly, there isn't much to tell yet, but I'll let you know what I can".  Val sits down on the cusion cross legged, figiting slightly. "Grew up in a small town in the middle of nowhere, Family had been integrated into the human population for generations by the point I was born, so beyond the occasional story or half remembered tradition I grew up like a human girl, except for the obvious." Val points up at her slightly pointier than normal ears and bright green eyes.
"My name turned out to be a bit ironic as I started getting older. Val is apparently Thaudian for peaceful, one of the few words my mother actually knew in the language, but considering how many fights I got into, you'd think I was going out of my way to prove it wrong." She lets a lopsided grin take over her face, scratching behind her ear "To be honest, looking back that might have actually been what I was doing. Right now I'm just on the hunt to descover more about my ancestry and people, there were only a few other Adunian families back home, and none of them knew anymore than mine. I know that we're scattered all over, but I figure someone has to know more, at least in one of the big cities."
