In your own words, what is powergaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: To avoid powergaming, there are two things to reflect on as you're actioning, does your action impede someone else? Or does it ruin the experience of someone else? A good example of this is if I put my character into a terrible situation in which they are going to surely die from multiple people attacking him due to a decision I made. The consequence of that is not something I could so easily avoid, shooting a fireball from my character's hand, who couldn't previously do that, and killing everyone's character both impedes and ruins the experience of those other players. Doing that to save my own character significantly ruins the writing and effort other people put into their characters. Plus it's unrealistic, my character is just a human without any previous experience of magic, whipping that out of my hat suddenly wouldn't make sense either.
In your own words, what is metagaming, and why should it be avoided in roleplay?: Say that you're part of a clan of some sort, breaching the enemy lines as part of their troops, showing unquestionable loyalty to inevitably say.. execute the head boss out of some personal vengeance unbeknownst to everyone else in-character. Now, if you're talking to a friend because you're excited to share some lore that's great, but what's not great is if that friend tells the person who plays the head boss about your in-character plans then all of a sudden, you're interviewed and executed in-character for "suspicious behavior". Then.. that's entirely unfair, it completely ruins all the time spent being diligent and secretive all because you decided to share something you thought was cool. This ruins fair roleplay.

Character Name: Raijin Han
Character Race: Human
Character Gender: Male
Character Age: 27
Physical Description: Raijin Han is 6'5" and weighs 91 kg, with dark auburn-black hair and sharp black eyes. His hair falls loosely or is tied back in a topknot. Kimonos.
Roleplay Scenario:

Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head, “What brings you to this dingy town? She begins, then pauses to study your face—”Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”

Raijin didn’t flinch when the hag’s eyes met his. The candlelight cast strange shapes across his face, swallowing some features while sharpening others. Water dripped somewhere behind him, muffled by the thick silence of the tent. He stood still for a breath longer than expected, gaze lingering on the woman like he was weighing her against something unspoken. Then, with a tired exhale, he moved. Each step toward the cushion was quiet, deliberate. He sat. Cross-legged. Shoulders held with a tension that didn’t loosen, not even in rest. One hand settled over the katana at his hip, the curve of the sheath catching a faint gleam from the candlelight. His fingers brushed the hilt once, then again... slow... circling.

“Escaping from a place unwilling to satisfy my spirit...”  His grip closed tighter around the weapon. The flicker of flame above him bent slightly, disturbed by the faint shift in the air. “...and to see if there’s anything else willing to fill the void in my chest.” Raijin didn’t blink. Didn’t shift. He waited. Silent, still—like the next words might matter. Like the hag had something worth hearing.
