Your character has just arrived in a swampy, dim town. As they look around, their gaze is met with shacks and cabins. It smells of rotted wood and wet moss. They duck and step into a tattered tent, illuminated by a series of candles suspended in the air. At the back of the tent, an old hag raises her head.
“What brings you to this dingy town?” she begins, then pauses to study your face. A flicker of recognition passes over her features. “Ah, it’s you. I’ve been expecting you. Sit,” she gestures at a cushion, “Tell me your story.”
Alfarr sat down, his movements deliberate, as if he carried the weight of his thoughts with him. His gaze flicked to the floating candles, then back to the hag. He was silent for a moment, choosing his words carefully.
“I’m looking for something,” he began, his tone steady but tinged with hesitation. “Something more than… this.” He gestured vaguely toward the tent, the town, the swamp beyond.
The hag’s eyebrows lifted, and she leaned forward, her eyes gleaming with interest. “More? That’s a dangerous word. Plenty of folk have chased it and found only ruin. What makes you different?”
Alfarr’s jaw tightened. “I don’t want to fade away, living and dying without leaving a mark. Greatness—it’s out there for someone bold enough to take it. I just need to find my chance.”
The hag’s lips curled into a faint smile. “Greatness,” she murmured, her voice almost mocking. “Do you even know what that means? Power? Fame? Legacy? Or is it all just a shadow you’re chasing?”
“I don’t know yet,” Alfarr admitted, meeting her gaze. “But I know I can’t keep living in the background, watching others claim it.”
The hag studied him for a moment, her expression unreadable. “Bold words,” she said softly. “But greatness has a price. Are you willing to pay it?”
Alfarr’s expression hardened, a quiet determination settling in his eyes. “If it’s the only way forward, then yes. Whatever it takes.”
The hag leaned back, her gaze distant as if peering into something unseen. When she spoke again, her voice had a strange, almost knowing edge. “You may find what you seek, but remember—greatness is not without its shadows. Sometimes it takes more than it gives.”
Her words hung in the air, heavy and cryptic. Alfarr shifted, unsure whether they were a warning or a challenge.
The hag’s eyes narrowed as she looked at him again, her voice cutting through the silence. “So, what will it be? Are you truly ready for what lies ahead?”
Alfarr opened his mouth, but the weight of her stare froze the words in his throat.
“Oh, I just, uh…” he stammered, tensing up. He eyed the crone, then glanced toward the flickering tent flap. For a moment, the air thickened with anticipation, until…
He suddenly woke up.
Alfarr sat up straight to look at his surroundings, and found that the spot where the crones tent had stood was now empty with no trace of it ever being there.
